This summer, fashion designer Gabriela Hearst—who won the prestigious International Woolmark Prize in January—traveled to Turkana, a district in north west Kenya, with Carolyn Miles, the CEO of Save The Children, whose work benefits the famine crisis and drought in Africa.

“I learned that more than 1,000 families in need were not being reached due to lack of funds. To reach them with cash grants through to the next harvest several months, Save the Children calculated it would cost around $600,000,” Hearst told “And that’s what I’m committed to donate.”

In an unconventional approach, Hearst plans to donate the full $600,000 solo—no fundraiser, fine print, or charity benefits required. The $600,000 will provide $55 per month to more than 1,0000 Turkana families, providing funds for food, livestock and clean water.

Which is not to say you still can’t get involved. For the first time ever, from October 1 to October 8, Gabriela Hearst handbags will be available on and (Purchased through the designer, Gabriela Hearst handbags have a 1,500 name waitlist.) Consumers can show their support by nabbing a handbag during the week-long promotion, but do know buying a bag does not affect Hearst’s donation.
