Fashion

Whether you’ve booked a flight somewhere urban for business or are jetting to the tropics for a getaway, one of the most exciting aspects of travel is stocking up on vacation clothes. But the mark of a frequent traveler who cares about fashion is cultivating a signature look that takes you everywhere (and comfortably on any mode of transportation). We asked five designers—all of whom are up in the air as often as they’re backstage—to reveal their favorite travel looks. From versatile sweaters to comfortable denim and playful socks, let the mainstays of their wander-wear inspire you to look polished every step of the way.

Andrea Lieberman, Founder & Designer, A.L.C.

“With my busy lifestyle, I’m often running to catch a flight,” New York City-based designer Andrea Lieberman tells us. “So I prefer traveling with a sleek carry-on like a Rimowa suitcase to keep everything streamlined and ensure a quick exit from the airport.” The founder of A.L.C. doesn’t let the stress of traveling rile or rumple her. “My go-to outfit is perfect for the plane because it’s so comfortable, but it’s also dressy enough to wear straight to a meeting once I land.”

Stylist turned designer and co-founder of THE GREAT., Meritt Elliott (pictured left) is an expert in travel dressing hacks. “I always throw in a cashmere piece for warmth or to use as a makeshift pillow,” she says. The plush layer isn’t the only pro tip in her mix of army trousers, worn-in sweatshirts, and comfortable moccasins. “This outfit could be entirely transformed with a high heel and some red lipstick if I need to get off the plane and out to dinner,” Elliott says of her look, which is always finished off with a glam watch so no matter the time zone, she’s always fashionably early.

Emily Current, Co-Founder & Designer, THE GREAT.

Elliott’s partner in design at THE GREAT., Emily Current (pictured left), has a travel ensemble that’s a natural fit for the L.A. stylist. “I live in jeans and a tee in general and find ways to dress this uniform up or down for most occasions,” she says. “When traveling I choose denim with a little bit of stretch for comfort.” The forward-thinker opts for easy slides on-the-go, “But I always keep fun socks in my bag for walking through security and for the plane.” She always wears her statement hat, rather than packing it, to conserve space in her luggage and preserve its shape. And she’s never without her favorite accessory: her iPad. “I stock it full of movies, but I love to play solitaire best.”
